Pixar's 4 tenets to success

There are some stories which hide a more poignant stories behind them. When Rob Cook took centre stage at INK Conference, in association with TED, just that happened. I wasn't aware that he was the author of Pixar's Renderman software which revolutionised the animation industry. In fact, this software piece alone was so powerful that Steve Jobs wanted it to be sold as a tand alone solution. It was ahead of its time for mass use. But Pixar used it to effectively take away the crown of animation from Disney Studios.

Cook presented the process of creating an animation movie in a simple way. He centred his talk around four tenets:

  • Start with what not how
  • Mock up, mock up, mock up
  • Balance of power (between creative and business)
  • Review, review, review
  • Have fun
In fact, Cook's emphasis on balance of power was very apt, we often get lost in the swabbles between business and creative. There is an pneuma ship out there. However, most sucessful movie studios have found a way to strike the fit balance. We need to learn from them.
