This a complete mind bender. How do you ensure children and youth retain their capability to imagine?
Like the 14-year boy from Gaza who helped YouTube fix a problem during one of its contests which led YouTube to appoint him a local evangelist. That boy had somehow found a way to free his mind from the external conflict.
Rasha Ali from Palestine has been working with this single objective in mind. Growing up under an environment which under constant conflict and war, Ali found out that as a child her own mind was occupied by e external threat and was not able to imagine anything a regular child does.
Ali brought up the inner tussle that goes on in all of us beautifully. In 2008, when the US went into recession, Ali looked around and said, 'oh, I didn't imagine the US took may have its problems.' Ali had migrated to the US as did many at her age from Palestine. The change helped her overcome the occupation of her mind she had experienced and move on with life.
However, the recession awakened in her a desire to go back home and do something for all those other children out there who were still occupied by the threat outside.
Ali's journey has led her throughout the Palestine looking at opportunity to free the youth to imagine. Because, "imagination is our salvation," Ali says.
