A special limited edition of the Kingfisher Swimsuit Special 2008 calendar was auctioned earlier this year. It attracted 60 bidders, 74 bids, and the top bid of Rs 150,000. The accumulated proceeds went to charitable organizations such as the Akanksha Foundation, Dignity Foundation, Jana Kalyan Welfare Society and Sense International (India).

More recently, The Hair India People, an association of hair dressers, organized a cut-a-thon to raise money for Voice, an NGO that works with street children. They charged Rs 600 per haircut and throughout the day, celebrities lent their support by getting a haircut. At the end of the day, all the money was handed over to Voice by the crew of Rock On.

Organized forms of charity have been around for a long time and play a large role in helping money reach the needy. The legendary Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity, founded in 1950, received an estimated US $50 million in donations every year from New York alone. Now, in 2008 we have over a million NGOs and with the evolving times, the techniques with which funds are being raised have also changed. Innovative ideas are being used to increase transparency and to assure people that their donations are being utilized for the right cause. Industry veterans tell us the latest trends.

Bringing in transparency
“Donation in cash brings in skepticism amongst the donors. People feel more connected with the campaign when they give in kind. The tangibility factor leaves the donors much more convinced,” said Hina Goyal, trustee and project coordinator of the Ek Mutthi Anaaj campaign led by the MCKS Food for Hungry Foundation (covered in DARE Feb 08 issue). Implemented in July last year, the campaign seeks contributions from donors in the form of food grain.

For HelpAge India, a not-for-profit organization that provides relief and protects the rights of India’s elderly, most donations come in the form of cash. “But whenever a need has been identified for clothes, blankets or furniture for old-age homes, we have always gotten a good response,” says Harvinder Singh Bakshi, National Director- Advocacy.

People are becoming extremely receptive to donating in kind and organizations are putting a greater emphasis on this form of fundraising. The Naz Foundation (India) Trust, for example, that provides support and care to those living with HIV and AIDS, clearly states on their website that building material such as cement, bricks, hardware, wiring and fittings are the most needed, after food.

Says Anuradha Mukherjee, Programs Manager, “The only reason we have been able to sustain our carehome and in fact even planning to expand it is because we are getting a lot of support from people in the form of bulk ration and other supplies such as mixer, grinder and cooking utensils.” Many people have also been donating clothes for the 35 children currently in their care home.

Last year students of Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), New Delhi purchased paper stars of Rs 5 each and dropped it in this make-believe Make-a-Wish well

The Naz Foundation also encourages donors to interact directly with the 1500 families living with HIV in Delhi. “Money can be raised from anywhere, but these families and children need to be interacted with,” says Anuradha. Have they been successful in doing so? Well, according to her, their donors from abroad write letters to the children and even send them birthday greeting cards. “Many families spend their birthdays and anniversaries by sponsoring meals and spending time with the children at our care home,” she says.

Make-A-Wish Foundation that grants wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses regularly update their “current pending wish list” on their website so that donors know some of the childrens' wishes that need to be fufilled. “We encourage donors to interact with the children, tell them stories, etc to divert their attention from the illness. If the donor doesn’t have time to do so, Make-A-Wish sends them photographs capturing the wish fulfillment,” says Dakhina Mitra, Divisional Coordinator- Programs.

A lot of interest has also been generated for sponsoring trips and outdoor activities. Says Anuradha, “This is an extremely welcoming gesture as outdoor activities are extremely important for children’s holistic growth.” Naz Foundation has had sponsored trips to the Delhi Zoo, Appu Ghar, Children’s Park, Water Park etc in the past. Similarly Make-A-Wish gets a lot of “I wish to visit...” wishes from children for donors to fulfill.

Sponsoring the needy
Last year, around 18,000 older people were sponsored under HelpAge India’s Sponsor-A-Grandparent program and the organization’s statistics show a trend towards larger and meaningful contributions. Says Harvinder, “The donor usually gives around Rs 600 a month to provide for the person’s basic necessities including food, clothing, medical, etc.” Regular reports on how the money is being spent are usually sent to the donors.

However, Harvinder tells us that programs like these can get a bit taxing on the organizations. “If the donor wishes to stop donating after the one year period, it can get difficult to find another one,” he says.

Requesting for support/sponsershep
written by Dr Surendra Pd Dimri, September 14, 2010
Respected Sir,
Greeting from Badrish Kirti Jan Kalyan Samiti,(BKJKS).
Badrish Kirti Jan Kalyan Samiti,(BKJKS) is a society registered as a non Governmental (not-for profiting making)organization under society registration act 21-1860.Foreign Contribution regulation act,1976, and section 12A &80 G of Indian Income Tax act 1961.Working in the remote and inaccessible areas in Uttarakhand, a province in Indian Himalayas, the area we work is remote and underdeveloped part of Uttarakhand. This is a state which itself has been historically neglected and marginalized within India.
Geography has determined the life condition of these villages in many important ways, Life in the mountains is difficult-to fetch water and collect firewood requires climbing up and down narrow trails over long distance. The challenge of the terrain has complicated the serving of the area.
Most families in the area where we work live off animal husbandry and farming their own small plots. This is sufficient for sustaining themselves only for eight and nine month of the year, during the rest of which they have to by their food. Apart from selling their small quantities of milk and vegetables on the market, about a four hour jeep drive way, there are very few opportunities to earn cash income. Since 1985 BKJKS has worked some of most disadvantaged people of society. It is education more then any thing else that help people take control of their own lives. Yet in India millions of children are unable to complete their schooling because of poverty of their situation, for this reason BKJKS sees education as the single most effective way to helping communities get out the poverty. Many school children from poor backgrounds in India drop out of education by the age of ten. Often their parents are illiterate themselves; their local school are very poor, or their parents need them to work to earn extra income for the family. Today, more then 150 million of Indian's population came from these extremely poor communities and the vast majority still lacks proper housing, medical care, education and employment prospects.BKJKS wants funds such as educational projects Residential Bridge Camp for the Schooling of Adolescent Disadvantaged Girls, drop out children for reschooling, and adult literacy classes in remote block of district Chamoli, so we can make improvement to thousands of peoples lives. In this regards BKJKS want financial support from your side. Expecting your help for this great humanitarian cause. Our hope is that BKJKS journey will useful for all whose aim to make development more impactful. We need your ideas, your presence, and your moral, physical and financial support in our work with mountain communities.
Looking forward for your kind consideration. I eagerly await your reply.
Thanking you and warm regards.

Subject:- help to ngo for making a shelter home for orphaned street RUNAWAY children Home
Dear Sir/Madam

MANAV KALYAN SANSTHAN [MKS] organization is a, not- profit and non -Governmental organization in INDIA. Though the organization is established legally registered on1995 and registration Number 181/jodhpur/94-95 by the state Government of Rajasthan. Established by dedicated professionals who were working in different child focused organization before. Some of them were experienced orphan & vulnerable life so far, the number of street children present in the boundaries of Jodhpur is over 2500 and the situation is really pathetic & inhumane. We are presently looking for financial support, as for our mandate so that we can take up the activities in the benefited of the distressed children. However our present program is running under 'Rajasthan State AIDS control society’, which is based on behavioral change in the street children. Furthermore, we understand that for overall development of street children there untouched, we believe that you and we share same missions & good & you will be happy to extend to us the financial support. If you have any queries about our organization please feel free to have communication & sharing. Anticipating a favorable response
MKS mission is to provide care, love and development for children living on the streets of Jodhpur
We strive to help as many children as possible and focus on those in most urgent need.
We assist children with their immediate challenges, such as homelessness, malnutrition and illness, while also developing their attitudes and skills so they can make a better future for themselves.
We reach over 1000 children daily through our street schools, vocational centers. We want to do more.
MKS is a fully registered, non-profit, non-governmental organization. It was established in 1995 and employs a staff of seventy dedicated local people. Salaries are modest, the office is small, and we stretch our funds to maximize their impact. Unlike many other organizations, mks has little savings, but spends what it gets. The annual budget is about $200,000.
The eleven-member Board is elected bi-annually and consists of doctors, professors, social workers and community members
Mks main activities are the provision of:
•an information/advice help line for children in need
•repatriation of children to their families
•temporary and permanent homes
•medical care and sanitation
•nutrition
•emotional support and counseling
•education
•vocational training
•awareness, advocacy and research
The temporary homes, vocational centers and counseling services are recent additions to our services. We would like to expand our thriving vocational training program further, and build more homes. We are introducing a Monitoring and Evaluation process across all our programs in order to increase the quality and efficiency of our services. And we are increasing our fund-raising efforts in order that we may help as many street children as possible.

Mission:
•provide care, love and development for
children living on the streets of jodhpur
Philosophy:
•help as many children as possible
•focus on those in greatest need
•do not discriminate or avoid difficult cases
Strategy:
•create a comprehensive system of services to fulfill children’s long-term needs for education, skills, and emotional support, as well as their short-term needs for nutrition, health and shelter
•maximize the impact of this system through: integrating programs, monitoring and improving the quality of service, and seizing opportunities to expand

The organization program components

•Care & Support of orphans & vulnerable children
•Multy sect oral the abused child protection system
•Adoption
•Health
•Street children
•Education
• sponsor ship
• Disability
• Income generation
•HIV/AIDS
•Gender/Women’s Right/
The end result is to raise reliable, responsible, resourceful and productive citizens through providing and facilitating the education, instruction, training and equipping with skills to the children. Besides, preaching gospel & spiritual based training.
As we mentioned above MKS accomplishing different programs before & now a days there are 500 orphans & vulnerable children assisting by the organization. But, due to financial & material constraints and also lack of getting sufficient training in the domestic & abroad to build organization capacity, we couldn’t running the current & the near future programs properly. Now days a number of beneficiary children increases from time to time. So, we need any partner who is willing to work with us MKS still have no permanent partner who can share it’s burden. Finally, we kindly request your little contribution & visiting our project areas.
God Bless our world

Judav has established in the year 2006 by likeminded local leaders, and committed for the upliftment of deprived and poor community. The main thought behind the creation of Judav is to create a way of upliftment of the deprived community to bring them into the mainstream of development. Judav also believes in creating awareness on the rights of human beings through the community mobilization.
Background to formation of Judav is that; after the independents our Center and State Governments have implements various developmental and welfare schemes to improve the socio-economic, educational and politically status of poor, tribal and deprived communities. Our constitution provide equity right to every Indians, but this is true that in the remote and tribal area peoples are living with deficiency of proper road, education and health facilities, drinking water and unsecured livelihood.
When plans are design of welfare scheme that time the strategy of the schemes are work out very useful to upliftment of civil societies. At the implementation level the main thought and focus are overlooked by bureaucrats and political person for their personal interest. Lack of proper awareness and education the needy population are not acquire the benefits and benefits goes to unneeded persons. Economically poor, deprive and tribal are mostly illiterate and unorganized so that they can not approach to welfare scheme and exploited. They are not aware about the constitutional rights. Their livelihood is depending on forest, low productive land, livestock and labour. That type of so many issues are creating ditch among the society.
To revert the present condition and fill the gaps between different communities with multi-sphere empowerments, protect their rights, develop self confidence and reputation of deprived, poor and tribal community and mainstreaming them with development these are main ideology to formation of the Judav.

We are working in Gogunda, Badgaon and Kumbhalgar block of Rajasthan state of India. Our present programs are-
(a) Quality education and Common School system
- Creating awareness on quality & common Education.
- Creating awareness among community on Right to Education.
- Mainstream all the children (School Enrolment & Retentions of School
dropout students).
- Activation of SDMC and PTA members.

(b)Safe Motherhood and Child development
(Mobilization of community for the fundamental Right to health)
- Reduction in MMR & IMR.
- Sensitisation of Community & Pachayat members.
- Sensitisation to the PHC/sub center for immunizations & availability
of staff at head Quarter.
- Sensitisation to the Anganwadi workers for immunization and supply
of nutrition to child and pregnant women.

CFO
written by Tony Davies, August 25, 2009
Greetings

What you perhaps require to raise funding for your project are the tools for you to source your own funding from your own investor base. These are your clients, friends, databases and suppliers all of whom will likely invest in your company if you could reinforce the value of the securities you are offering them as investors in your project.

As it stands you are probably a reasonable investment risk for a start up or a company without too much of a track record. However when you pitch your offering to private individual investors in the current market they require some degree of comfort that your risk is not as great as most unknowns are, making your investment more attractive and safer for them than they would encounter in an investment in a normal star up business.

WHAT’S ON OFFER

Steiner Carlson funding is an innovative and secure means of funding higher than normal risk ventures. These are companies that do not have a credit rating above at least B++.

Where you need (as an example) $3,000,000 (three million dollars) to either buy out an existing business or to expand your current business the Steiner Carlson method of funding is ideal.

You offer your business as security but that does not necessarily cover the entire amount of risk from your borrowing or the investment you seek to raise.

Steiner Carlson will support your capital raising effort with an underwriter to the offering. They will also provide financing to your investors (the friends, customers, suppliers and databases) to invest in your project.

FINANCE AND UNDERWRITING

The Underwriter will underwrite any short fall (subject to terms and conditions) in the capital you seek to raise from your investors secured by the assets of your business.

The finance component works in tandem with the underwriting component to secure both the underwriting and the financing risk to Steiner Carlson.

Where for instance you wish to raise $3,000,000 for your business, the finance component will comprise an amount of up to $1,000,000 (one million dollars) subject to your investors agreeing to invest in your venture.

If you are able to secure sufficient numbers (say 1000 investors each willing to invest $3,000 or more) you will easily be able to raise your $3,000,000. Its not a difficult thing to do. It requires a little effort on your part. If on the other hand you require to raise a larger amount, the difference is funded by the underwriter. In the alternative where your investors come up with a total of only $2,000,000, the underwriter will provide the balance $1,000,000 making it a total of $3,000,000 you require financed by the financing arm of Steiner Carlson.

BENEFITS OF AN UNDRWRITER AND FINANCING

An issue of securities in a capital raising is far more attractive where investors (each with a minimal amount of investment) are comforted by an underwriting of the issue and some finance towards their investment.

It is a sign of confidence by a third party willing to risk an amount in your business. And where the third party is an institution such as Steiner Carlson people will be more willing to invest than they would where the investment consists of merely your ideas and your business. In addition they must consider the risk that you have no track record with them as a business or as managers of successful businesses.

Regardless of how good your investment may be and unless you are a household name, it would be more difficult now than it has ever been to raise money from individuals or institutions for new or unknown businesses.

If you require further discussion on the proposal, kindly contact:

Tony Davies

Amazing article, very informative and kudos to the innovation in bringing out new projects by various organization for the benefit of the society.

We started with Global Environment Concern 6 months back running a small slum school in Chandigarh and projects like Pick a Plant and Gift a plant across Chandigarh, Delhi and U.S. Arizona state university.

We all love our environment and the need of time is to find ways to protect it which we are trying to do by education , awareness and planting more and more trees.
